Collide24 Talk About Their New Book and Their Collaboration-Driven Platform

Lena Manger and Kevin Moll, the Berlin-based art directors, founded their independent, non-commercial design platform, Collide24, in June 2019, aiming to explore collaboration as a creative practice.

Inaugurated to present collaborations of creatives working in visual arts, graphic design, music, CGI, animation, and fashion, Collide24 also inspires, educates, and connects people through contemporary culture by featuring interviews and artists' projects from around the world.

Today, to celebrate their first year of existence, they release their first book this coming spring, titled 'C24 Archive One'. The book serves as a printed archive of all the artists they worked with during this exciting period.

We talked with the duo about how they met, their platform's ideation, and their own collaborative work.

gggaaallleeerrryyy: How did you come up with the idea of Collide24?

Collide24: As designers ourselves, we had the feeling that collaboration has always been an essential aspect of our practice. While each collaboration in the past has helped us grow immensely, they all felt different compared to each other. It's the individual and intense process behind each collaboration that inspired us to found C24. It is meant to be an open and tolerant playground for all kinds of creativity, bringing together different creatives from various disciplines, no matter their education or status.

ggg: How did you meet?

C24: The two of us met about two years ago at the Captcha Design Festival in Mannheim, where we took part in an intense workshop with the amazing Jonathan Castro. We met so many great people there – some of them remained friends of ours ever since. A few months after Captcha, we moved to Berlin, now sharing a studio space together with Present Books.

Collaboration: Liel Bomberg and Karin Kimel

ggg: Having created a platform for design collaborations, tell us more about your own collaborative work for C24.

C24: It's been a wild ride so far! As a two-person-team, it can get challenging to juggle between our commissioned work and our self-initiated projects, like C24. That's why open communication and a good working structure have always been important to us. While we split up some of the tasks, this platform gave us the chance to channel all our interests, skills, and visions into one project.

For the future, we would love to open up C24 more and more, starting with our upcoming redesign, where we invited a few designers from our community to jump on board and collaborate with us. It's meant to be a collaborative platform, so why not involve other artists to join us as well? Apart from the redesign, there are a few new formats and ideas that we are currently working on to make it more collaborative, more open, more versatile.

The book 'C24 Archive One' showcases the work of over 100 international designers, artists, studios, labels, and collectives, such as C'estainsi, Colin Doerffler, Virgile Flores, Yuen Hsieh, Samara Keller, Cindy Kutíková, Charlotte Rohde, Robuche, Leah Maldonado, Panama Papers Office, Ada Sokół, typelab.fr and many more, as well as 6 exclusive collaborations by selected artists and interesting interviews, stories, and essays on creativity, design, and life.
